Circulation
The library serves the "common good" by collecting resources of interest to its clientele, maintaining these resources, and making them available for either circulation or in-house use. The library must strike a balance between access and accountability. We have attempted to define our loan periods with that balance in mind-offering a relatively long loan period for the convenience of the individual user, while enforcing policies to insure that materials continue to be accessible to all of our library users.

Reserve:
For Cornell Students Only:
Reserve items may be checked out for two hours, unless it is within one hour of the library closing, in which case items must be returned within one hour of the library opening.
Non-Circulating Materials:
Some materials are intended for short-term use. These items also ought to be available at all times to in-house users. Therefore certain collections do not circulate outside the library:
Serials, both bound and unbound
Reference books
Archive materials
Recalls:
For All Borrowers
All circulating items are subject to recall if needed for another patron. It is important to return recalled items promptly. If a patron places a recall on an item, we hope that in the spirit of "common good" the current borrower will return the item promptly, no later than their due date. Overdue fines double for recalled items.
Fine Policy:
For Students and Public Borrowers
The standard fine for overdue materials is $.50 per day. Children's materials accrue overdue fines at $.10 per day. The fine rate for recalled items is $1.00 per day after the due date.
Lost Materials:
For All Borrowers
The library considers an item lost after two overdue notices have been sent. At this point, the borrower will be assessed two fees: a processing fee and a replacement charge.
The processing fee ($5.00) covers the cost of staff generating notices, postage, searching for the item, and related staff activities. Even if the item is eventually returned, the processing fee will apply because the library has expended these efforts already. The replacement cost is based on typical cost for the format:
| Books |
$20.00 |
| VHS & DVD |
$30.00 |
| Audiobooks |
$30.00 |
CD/LP/Cassette
|
$15.00 |
| Browsing Room Periodicals |
$10.00 |
The replacement cost does not cover the costs to the library for cataloging and processing the replacement item. So, replacing lost items takes away from our overall "buying power."
